How You Can Help
-
Who does Scholar House serve? The Scholar House program serves single parents who are working toward a college degree or career certification while raising children. Our program provides a strong support system that includes family advocacy, academic coaching, life-skills training, parenting support, and access to stable housing. Whether Scholars live on-site or participate in our community-based program, they receive the tools and encouragement to succeed in school and build a secure future for their families.
-
Can pregnant women become Scholars?Yes! Expectant parents can apply for the Scholar House program before their child is born. We encourage pregnant students to enroll early in our community-based program, so they have access to support and resources before their baby arrives.
-
Do I have to live at Scholar House? No. While we offer affordable housing for student parents through our residential program, we also provide community-based support for single parents who prefer to live independently. Both programs include family advocacy, academic coaching, and life skills training to help Scholars succeed.
-
I need housing right now. Can Scholar House help? The Scholar House program is not an emergency housing service. However, if you are facing immediate housing insecurity, we encourage you to complete an interest form and speak with a team member. We can discuss your situation and help connect you with local resources while you work toward long-term stability.
-
What counties does Scholar House serve?Heartland Scholar House currently has locations in Anderson, Marion, and Muncie, Indiana. If you live outside these areas but are interested in applying, we encourage you to reach out to discuss your options.
-
Can I transfer to a different Scholar House location than the one I started at?Transfers between Scholar House program locations are possible but not guaranteed. Availability and program requirements may vary by location, so Scholars must coordinate with their Family Advocate to make a transition.
-
I live in another city but want to move to a Scholar House location. Can I start before I move?Yes! Scholars can begin the application process before relocating. If you plan to move to a city with a Scholar House program, we encourage you to apply in advance and work with our team to make the transition as smooth as possible.
-
Is Scholar House new?Heartland Scholar House opened its first location in Anderson, Indiana, in 2022, followed by Marion and Muncie in 2024. Our program is based on the successful model developed by Family Scholar House, which has been serving single parents for nearly three decades.
-
Is Scholar House a for-profit company? No, Scholar House is a nonprofit program dedicated to helping single parents achieve self-sufficiency through education. Heartland Scholar House is managed by JobSource, the Community Action Agency for Grant and Madison counties, ensuring Scholars receive the highest level of support and resources at no cost.
-
Is there a cost for this program? No, Scholars do not pay to participate in the Scholar House program. While residential Scholars may pay rent based on income through a housing voucher program, all other services—including academic coaching, financial guidance, parenting support, and family advocacy—are completely free.
Meet Our Leadership Team
A Program Without Walls
Scholar House meets you where you are
We offer flexible support tailored to your needs, whether that means meeting in person (at home or in the office) or connecting virtually.
If you’re a parent pursuing post-secondary education, you’re eligible to engage with Scholar House programming, no matter where you are on your educational journey.

Parents come to us at different stages: some are completing high school and planning for college, while others are already enrolled in degree or certificate programs. Our services are designed to adapt to each Scholar’s goals, circumstances, and motivations.
Every Scholar begins by partnering with a Family Advocate to build stability and set personal goals. As they progress, they receive one-on-one academic support from an Academic Coach. Scholar Families also attend monthly workshops that include meals and enriching educational activities for both parents and children.

Single parents pursuing full-time education may qualify for our residential program, which offers safe, affordable housing through degree completion. Residential Scholars commit to regular meetings with their Family Advocate and Academic Coach, and participate in monthly workshops as part of their holistic support.
